The Promise of Home

Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you, for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also (John 14:1-3).

Why would this promise from Jesus provide comfort and peace to the disciples, and to Christians today as well?

It’s the promise of access. Jesus is the one who prepares the place for us, and is there at the door to receive us. We cannot walk into just anyone’s house. We either have to have a key, or know someone who lives there. Jesus is the way into the Father’s house for us (see also John 14:6). If we know Him, we will not be turned away.

It represents belonging. One of the most attractive aspects about home to us is that it is somewhere we feel we belong. We are expected and welcome, and there is always room for us. In the Father’s house, there are many dwelling places (or “rooms” in some translations); no one who wants to be there will be left out.

Most importantly, it is the promise of a continued relationship. We have the expression, “Home is where the heart is”. Home is not about the house, the furniture, or the location. Who you live with makes it home. The most beautiful thing about Jesus’ promise is that we can be where He is.

Jesus tells us that one day there will be a place that fills our need and longing for home, in a way that it’s never been filled before. We can trust Him that no matter what we encounter in this world, there is a home prepared for us, with our Savior waiting there.
