Being Committed to God's Ways

What makes dating different than marriage? While there are many things that one may suggest constitute the difference between the two, I would suggest one difference that all of the other differences hinge on: commitment. In dating, there is a freeness. You don't have to continue to date if you so choose, but in marriage, you have committed to being with the one you have married no matter what may come. That's why vows like 'in sickness and in health' are said. It's a reminder of the permanent nature of the union you are entering.

God wants this same type of commitment. If we are going to follow God in this life, we need to commit to His ways. The way God wants us to go is often times more difficult than the way we would choose for ourselves, but if you love God, you will commit to it anyway. Below is Psalm 101; read it and observe the godly ways to which David is commiting. Do you think it would be easy for David to live his life this way?

"I will sing of lovingkindness and justice,
To You, O Lord, I will sing praises.
I will give heed to the blameless way.
When will You come to me?
I will walk within my house in the integrity of my heart.
I will set no worthless thing before my eyes;
I hate the work of those who fall away;
It shall not fasten its grip on me.
A perverse heart shall depart from me;
I will know no evil.
Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, him I will destroy;
No one who has a haughty look and an arrogant heart will I endure.

My eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me;
He who walks in a blameless way is the one who will minister to me.
He who practices deceit shall not dwell within my house;
He who speaks falsehood shall not maintain his position before me.
Every morning I will destroy all the wicked of the land,
So as to cut off from the city of the Lord all those who do iniquity."

What an amazing example for our lives today! If you are not able to read these words and affirm these commitments to God in your own life, can you say that you are committed to God like He calls you to be?
