Let Us make...
"Let there be light" - Gen 1:3
"Let there be an expanse..." - Gen 1:6
"Let the waters ... be gathered ..., and let dry land appear." - Gen 1:9
"Let the earth sprout vegetation" - Gen 1:11
"Let there be lights in the expanse" - Gen 1:14
"Let the waters teem ... let birds fly above" - Gen 1:20
"Let the earth bring forth living creatures" - Gen 1:24
"Let Us make man in Our image" - Gen 1:26
Do you notice a difference, grammatically, between that last statement and the others?
All of them are passive except the last one. "Let there be," "let the earth," "let the waters." To be sure, God was still doing the creating. The lights weren't self-creating. The earth didn't create the animals. The waters didn't create the life in them. However, they were all mentioned passively in the statements and acts of creation.
Passive statements are cold and impersonal.
Then God said "Let Us make..." It feels like He's saying "Now We will really put Ourselves into this creation." Creation became personal with humans. God decided to create beings connected to His nature in their design, not merely designed by Him.
You are one of those creatures.
We respond to that fact in stages:
Do you understand the claim that you bear the image of God?
Do you accept that fact?
Do you realize the responsibility that places upon you?
Have you decided to meet that responsibility?
Gaining some grasp on the precious nature of our existence will drive us to meet that responsibility by humbly seeking Him. He has chosen to be found by those who want Him. Find Him and you'll find out what kind of creation you really are.
